Good Afternoon Great Gardeners,

Happy Summer! The hot weather is just beginning and thankfully it hasn't been too hot. We just got back from a trip to Disney World and the temperatures down there were 90+ with a heat index of over 100+.

The last time we actually stayed on the Disney World Resort property was 16 years ago when we were on our honeymoon. Not much has changed in them 16 years. The resort we stayed at still looks exactly the same.

One of my favorite parks we went to is Epcot. I love how you can go to the different countries and see different foods and things that each country makes.

Also in Epcot there is a ride called 'Living With The Land' that is perfect for a gardener to see. It is not a very fast ride, but it takes you through their greenhouses and it is completely amazing to see how they grow their plants.

Of course, my daughters favorite part was seeing all of the Disney Princesses. I think we waited in line longer for them then any of the rides we rode on.

As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, hit reply. I would love to hear from you. Have a great-gardening day.

Sincerely,
Holly

Painted Rocks
Image
A simple but unusual hobby is spreading across the Buckeye State. Residents are picking up and passing along colorful stones to share random acts of kindness.

Called Kindness Rocks, they are meant to lift the spirits of anyone who finds one. Some have messages of inspiration while others are beautifully decorated.

You too can participate in this fun activity. If you find a rock, you can either re-hide it or keep it. Lots of people choose to keep their first rock and then re-hide the rest.

Get the family together one evening and paint a few rocks. When your out and about town place them in different areas such as parks, business landscapes and other places where other people can find them.

There are a few rules though when creating painted rocks; no bad language, no political agendas, only beautiful inspirational messages or decorations. Most important of all make sure they are outside and you do not damage anyone's property.

Have fun and rock on!
Japanese Beetles
Image
Japanese beetles are one of the top problems for roses besides black spot.

Usually seen starting the end of June into July, these beetles unfortunately do not discriminate on what types of plants they feed on. Leaving behind skeletonized leaves and completely defoliated plants in their wake.

One beetle may not cause much damage, but they like to feed  in groups.

There is hope for your garden. Although it is impossible to get rid of Japanese beetles entirely, there are some controls which can be used that with a little time and patience will keep them in check.

What We Recommend:

Always apply chemicals in the early morning or late evening.  Only use chemicals as needed.
  • Hand Pick: Each morning pick them off plants and toss them into a bucket of soapy water. If you get the “scouts” that are the first to arrive, it will greatly reduce the overall population.
  • Bonide Neem Oil Is an excellent all purpose insecticide, miticide, fungicide for organic gardening. It is also safe to use around pets and children. Just follow directions on bottle. Will burn plants if applied during the heat of the day.

  • Garden Safe Crawling Insect Killer: Kills insects whom come into contact with it or ingest it within 24 hours. (Can not be used on vegetable gardens.)

  • St. Gabriel Milky Spore: Prevention is the best medicine. Place down Milky Spore to kill future grubs that turn into Japanese Beetles, following the directions on the back of the bag.
  • Rue: Is known to be a natural, herbal repellent for Japanese beetles. Plant it near your roses or raspberries.
We Do Not Recommend:
  • Japanese Beetle Traps: Many people ask about Japanese Beetle traps which are out on the market. We do not carry them here at the store, reason being is they attract more beetles to your garden than you may have had previously and they are not a very good means of eradication.
  • Sevin
