Kimberly's Carats

Alexandrite was discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1830 and named for Czar Alexander II.

In 1817 Pierre Cartier traded a double strand of natural pearls for a mansion at 653 Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Moonstone is said to bring good luck and many believe that you can see the future if you hold a Moonstone in your mouth during a full moon.

Garage Sale Find

About 30 years ago a woman from London found a showy ring at the British version of a garage sale. She paid the equivalent of $13 for it and after cleaning it up a bit made it a part of her day to day wardrobe. After enjoying the ring for many years her jeweler suggested that it could be quite valuable. She had it evaluated and found out the center stone was a 26.27 carat antique cushion cut diamond dating to the 1800's with I color and VVS2 clarity. The ring will be auctioned by Sotheby's in June and estimates are it could bring as much as $448,000. Nancy has made some great finds at antique stores and yard sales but nothing like this - Wow!

June Birthstones

June has three birthstones, Alexandrite, Pearl and Moonstone. Nancy likes to tell people born in June that they are lucky - they probably have the most expensive birthstone of anyone! Alexandrite is the most famous color change gemstones as it can change from greenish blue to red depending on the light. Discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1800's high quality gemstones are very rare. Often a synthetic Alexandrite is used in jewelry because of the high cost of natural gem material.

Pearls are one of the alternate birthstones for June and are possibly the best loved gem of all time. Pearls can be found in almost every color but white and cream are the most popular. Used as a symbol of wealth and status for thousands of years a Chinese historian recorded the first written mention of Pearls in 2206 BC.

Another alternate birthstone for June is Moonstone. Moonstone is a layered gemstone and when light falls between the layers it creates what is called adularescence - the light that appears to billow across the gemstone.
Adularescent moonstone was once called adularia, getting the name from a city in Switzerland, Mt. Adular, that was one of the first sources of fine-quality moonstone.
