Kimberly's Carats

Many cultures have credited Opal with supernatural origins and powers. Arabic legends say it falls from the heavens in flashes of lightning. The ancient Greeks believed Opals gave their owners the gift of prophecy and guarded them from disease. Europeans long considered the gem a symbol of hope, purity and truth.

In Brazil in the 1500s a Spanish conquistador washed dirt from a green Tourmaline crystal and confused the vibrant gem with emerald. His confusion lived on until scientists recognized Tourmaline as a distinct mineral species in the 1800s. People have probably used Tourmaline as a gem for centuries, but they identified it as some other stone (ruby, sapphire, emerald, and so forth) based on its coloring.

900 Year Old Crusader Jewelry

In Israel 2,500 schoolkids have been participating since summer in the excavation of a Crusader fortress on Tittora Hill, 20 miles northwest of Jerusalem. They have uncovered some amazing artifacts — rings, bracelets, earrings and hairpins — among the ancient clay ovens, cooking pots, jars, serving dishes and a table in the medieval fortress’ kitchen.

“The students and volunteers have exposed the inner courtyard of the Crusader fortress,” said Avraham Tendler, excavation director for the Israel Antiquities Authority. “Here, the fortress’ occupants cooked and baked for hundreds of years during the Middle Ages, some 900 years ago. It seems that the cooks of the time were not sufficiently careful with the jewelry they wore while cooking and baking, since numerous pieces of jewelry have been found in the excavation, some made of bronze and silver.”

October Birthstones

October has two birthstones, Opal and Tourmaline.

Because opal has the colors of other gems, the Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful of all. The Bedouins believed that opals contained lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms. When Australia’s mines began to produce opals commercially in the 1890s, it quickly became the world’s primary source for this gemstone.

Tourmaline can be found in many colors including pink, purplish red, blue and shades of green. It’s generally agreed that traces of iron, and possibly titanium, induce green and blue colors. Manganese produces reds and pinks, and possibly yellows while some pink and yellow Tourmalines might owe their color to radiation, which can be natural or laboratory-induced.
