Kimberly's Carats
Gemologist George Kunz—Tiffany’s famed gem buyer—was a notable Zircon advocate. He once proposed the name “starlite” to promote the gem’s fiery nature. The name never caught on.
Archaeological excavations revealed that the rulers of ancient Egypt adorned themselves with turquoise jewelry, and Chinese artisans were carving it more than 3,000 years ago.
Tanzanite is relatively new to the colored stone galaxy. In 1967 a Masai tribesman stumbled upon a cluster of highly transparent, intense violet-to-blue crystals weathering out of the earth in Merelani, an area of northern Tanzania.

Holiday Hours
During December we will have some expanded hours. In addition to our normal hours we will be open on Mondays before Christmas from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We will be closing at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday December 2nd due to the street closures associated with the annual Christmas Parade.
After much thought we have also decided to be closed on Sunday December 24th, Christmas Eve. In the past we have usually been open for a few hours on Christmas Eve but this year with it falling on a Sunday we have decided to be closed so that our staff can spend this day with their families. So, if you are a last minute shopper make sure you stop in by the 23rd!

December Birthstones
December has three birthstones, Blue Zircon, Turquoise and Tanzanite.
Zircon is found in a wide range of colors. For many years colorless Zircon was used to imitate diamonds. Folk wisdom grants Zircon the power to relieve pain, whet the appetite, protect travelers from disease and injury, to ensure a warm welcome, and to prevent nightmares. Major sources of Zircon are Thailand, Cambodia, and the southern part of Vietnam.
Turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones. Turquoise varies in color from greenish blue, through robin's egg-blue, to sky blue shades and its transparency ranges from translucent to opaque. Turquoise is plentiful and is available in a wide range of sizes. It is most often used for beads, cabochons, carvings, and inlays. Although its popularity fluctuates in fashion, it is a perennial favorite in the American Southwest.
Discovered in the late 1960s in Tanzania, and found only there, Tanzanite exhibits a rich violet-blue color for which it is treasured; often it is heat-treated to achieve this color. Colors range from blue to purple, and Tanzanites that are medium dark in tone, vivid in saturation, and slightly violet blue command premium prices.
