Issue 93
Hello Great Gardener,

It is hard to believe that eleven short years ago I was preparing to give birth to my daughter. She was my belated Mother's Day present (May 16th). Now she is blooming into such a beautiful young lady. There are days I wish I could turn back the clock and keep her this age forever. She has been such a blessing in my life.
Image
This year has been a rough year for her again, but she is a trooper and has kept us busy with her many activities. Since she is not able to do sports, she has been in dance, drama, and band. So this month culminates in a hectic month of play, dance recital, band recital, and my baby girl graduating fifth grade. I couldn't be more proud of her.

Happy Mother's Day to all who take on the role of mom!

As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, hit reply. I would love to hear from you. Have a great-gardening day.

Sincerely,
Holly

Planting Your Containers
Image
Container:
Start with a new or a cleaned sanitized pot. Old potting soil should be removed as it can be contaminated from what grew in it previously. There is no pot too large or too small but ideally it should have good drainage.
Image
Soil:
Fill  with a quality soil-less potting mix, preferably one containing slow release fertilizer. We highly recommend Wilson's Professional Potting Mix which is the same mix that we grow all of our great looking plants in the garden center.  Cheap potting soils are very costly, as the plants will never be as beautiful as they could be.  We want you to have maximum success for your efforts.

Proper Ratio Of Plants:
Use the proper ratio of plants in proportion to pot size. Some suggested guidelines (depending on the size of the plants)
  • Small  (8-10” size):
    3 plants
  • Medium  (12-14"):
    5 plants
  • Large  (16-20"):
    7 plants or more
  • After determining the proper number of plants, choose those that require the same growing conditions. i.e. sun/shade and moist/dry requirements.
  •  Pick tall “thrillers”, mounding “fillers” and low or trailing “spillers”  to balance out the container and give dimension.
Image
Plant:
Place the plants in the proper locations in your pot before planting to get an idea of the look.

Set the plants into the potting soil no deeper than the top of each rootball.  Planting too deeply can kill many kinds of plants. Gently firm the soil around the root systems as you plant.
Image
Water & Fertilize:
Water the container well.  Check moisture levels daily.  In hot, dry weather, containers often need watered more than once a day if they are grown outside.  A drip irrigation system with a timer will make your life easier and allow you to be away for extended periods.

Feeding the plants periodically with water soluble fertilizer will ensure vigorous healthy growth and more flowers.  We highly recommend Garden Elements Bud & Bloom.
Bye, Bye Ornamental Pears
Image
To preserve our wildlife habitats from being taken over by invasive species Ohio has put in a new law banning 38 species of plants from being sold here in the state.

What does that mean for you? If you are looking for ornamental pears, which are blooming now around the city, you will not find them; they are now illegal to sell.

Not a problem for us as there are many wonderful Spring blooming trees we would love to introduce to you such as;
Redbuds:
Redbuds are native to Ohio. One of the first trees to flower in the early spring, blooming petite lavender-pink flowers in clusters. Soon after, dark green, glossy leaves begin to form a beautiful backdrop, making these lavender-pink blooms stand out even more. Ideal for tight places or small lots, but will brighten up even the largest of yards.

Crabapples:
These are not like the old-fashioned crabapples that your grandparents may have had back in their day. Newer varieties are not as messy with stunning flowers in spring giving way to berries in the fall that birds love to eat.
Magnolias:
The Magnolias are blooming around town, and they are gorgeous. A beautiful, dense shade tree stunning flowers burst forth in late spring and early summer. These trees feature blossoms in white, pink, red, purple, or yellow depending on the variety.

Weeping Cherries:
Weeping cherries make a great focal point in the garden. They have elegant arching branches that become covered in thousands of blossoms every spring. Lush, glossy green leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and gold in the fall.
These were just a few of the many trees we carry here at the store. Stop on out and take a look around.

I have helped out at Wilson's since I was a baby, but have been on payroll for three seasons.

I run register, help stock and clean, and do whatever else is needed.

At our house, we do container gardening, and my favorite flower is Night Sky Petunia.  I love pink, purple, and white combinations in a container.
