Hi, BirdWatchers!

Julia and Karen met Shep, a special little bird at the Atlanta Audubon Society's office this week. Shep is a non-releasable, male Ruby-throated Hummingbird who was the victim of a window strike last fall. He is now under the care of Melanie Furr, AAS’s Education Director, and will serve as an ambassador to schools and outreach programs to draw attention to the perils of light pollution and window strikes for birds.

Shep's favorite perch is a silicone bracelet, which he can hold onto and sit easily.
Shep suffered a broken shoulder and can no longer fly, but he is still a happy and feisty little guy doing well in Melanie's care. She holds special permits from the USFWS and also Georgia DNR which allow her to care for him. She takes him to work with her so she can feed him throughout the day. She gives him daily baths and also takes him outside for sunshine and enrichment.
Shep feeds several times an hour on a special protein enhanced nectar available to zoos and wildlife rehabilitators. In the wild, hummingbirds get most of their nutrition from insects, so he would not survive without the additional nutrients. Melanie has offered him flightless fruit flies, but so far he has not been interested in them.

Melanie contacted us to do a wellness check on Shep since we have years of experience with hummingbirds as banders with Georgia Hummers. We were very pleased to see he weighs a healthy 3 grams and appears alert and bright eyed. His feathers are a bit of a mess from his injury, but as he molts and replaces them over the next year, he will look much better. Thanks to Melanie for being such a caring and devoted soul! We hope she and Shep will be able to attend our banding event at Smith-Gilbert Gardens on September 8th. Watch for details later this summer.
