Kimberly's Carats

Traditionally, Somewhere in Brazil in the 1500s, a Spanish conquistador washed the dirt from a green tourmaline crystal and confused the vibrant gem with emerald. His confusion lived on until scientists recognized tourmaline as a distinct mineral species in the 1800s.

Because opal has the colors of other gems, the Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful of all. The Bedouins believed that opals contained lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms.

Gold Mining in Virginia

A lot of people are surprised to find out that there was gold mining in Virginia. The earliest records of gold production in Virginia are reports of placer mining in 1804. At one time Virginia was the third largest gold producing state. Production declined after the California gold rush. Many mines were damaged during the Civil War although some low level production continued until World War II. You can find out more about gold mining and maybe even try your hand at panning at Monroe Park in Goldvein, off US 17, or Lake Anna State Park.

October Birthstones

October has two birthstones, Tourmaline and Opal.

Tourmaline has become a favorite among jewelry designers and gem collectors. Available in a wide variety of colors, it is ideally suited to almost anyone's taste. Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colors in many combinations in the same gemstone. One multi-color variety is watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink and white color bands.

Opals range in color from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red and blue. Opal is a non-crystalline silica gel that through time and nature's heating and molding processes, hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. When packed together in a regular pattern, a three-dimensional array of spaces are created that give opal its radiance.
