Issue 105
Hello Great Gardener,

We have been working hard to get ready for our Christmas Preview & Open House (Nov. 16th, 17th & 18th). The store is starting to look like a Christmas wonderland.

Our fresh greens have come in and our employees have started working on orders. See below for more information.

Poinsettias will be available for sale starting Christmas preview day.

Lastly, cut trees will be coming in after Thanksgiving.
As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, hit reply. I would love to hear from you. Have a great-gardening day.

Sincerely,
Holly

Soft Scale On Houseplants
Image
Is your house plant leaving a sticky residue on your table or carpet? Chances are you have scale.

Scale are tiny little oblong insects that attack a wide variety of houseplants. They appear as raised bumps on leaves and stems and vary in color.

Scale suck the juices from plant leaves and can cause plants to lose their vigor over time. Often they go unnoticed until the plants start to show signs of yellowing or wilting.

The clear sticky substance that they excrete is called Honeydew. A sticky floor beneath a susceptible plant is a telltale sign that infestation is underway.

There are several ways to treat plants;

1. Remove by hand - If there is a small infestation scale can be scrapped off by hand and tossed into a bucket of soapy water.

2. Insecticidal Soap - Insecticidal soap is an organic contact killer. It may take multiple treatments to get the scale under control.

3. Neem Oil - Is an organic Fungicide, Miticide and Insecticide.

4. Bonide Houseplant Systemic - This product is a systemic chemical that is taken up through the roots of the plant. Once it gets into the plant's system, it can protect it for up to 8 weeks. Please Note: If you have any animals or young children you will need to keep the plant out of reach of them.
Growing Aloe
Image
I have a window in the office where I grow all of my houseplants. I call it my magic window since they all seem to be doing quite well. Unfortunately, I can't keep my plants at home because my cat is a lover of eating them.

One of the plants I have is an aloe given to me by my mother in law. I have had it for several years now, and it has been thriving.

Aloes are great to have especially in the kitchen. The gel from the leaves has soothing properties that come in handy if you happen to burn yourself while cooking. Aloe is also found in many products on the market today, such as beverages, skin lotion, cosmetics, and ointments.

There is a fascinating history behind the aloe plant. Did you know that;
  • The Native Americans referred to it as "The Wand Of Heaven."

  • In ancient Egypt, Aloe Vera was called the ‘plant of immortality,’ and Egyptians also used it as a part of their burial rituals. Cleopatra included the plant in her beauty regimen and used the plant on her body and face.

  • Records have been found dating back to 2100 BC about the uses of Aloe.

Aloe, like other succulents, is easy to keep alive and healthy because it doesn’t need much maintenance.

Light: Bright, Indirect light. South, East or West facing windows

Mine is in an east facing window with morning sun and afternoon shade. It is about a foot away from it.

Water: Let the top couple inches dry out between waterings. Make sure not to let stand in water.

I water mine once every 1 to 2 weeks depending on the season.

Pruning: Pruning is not necessary except to remove damaged or faded leaves. When needed for a burn all you have to do is cut a tip off of one of the larger leaves. Once the tips cut off, it will scab over. The tip will not grow back, but the plant will continue to grow from the base.
Clay Pot Pilgrim Hat
Image
Image
This pilgrim hat craft can be done with the kids or just for fun to add a little decoration to your Thanksgiving decor.

What You Need:
1. 4 Inch Clay Pot
2. Black Paint
3. Black Foam Paper
4. Yellow Foam Paper
5. Modge Podge Sealer
6. Hot Glue Gun
7. Potting Soil & Plants Or Fake Flowers
8. Floral Foam (Only If Using Fake Flowers)

Steps:
1. Paint the clay pot black. It may take a couple of coats.
2. Once the paint is dry, you can seal with modge podge to give the pot a glossy sheen. It is optional. The pictures in the email have no sealer on them.
3. You need to draw and cut out a 6 Inch circle from the black foam paper. Using a plastic lid is useful.
4. Cut a rectangle out of yellow foam for the buckle. Then cut a smaller rectangle out of the middle of the first rectangle.

If you are going to plant up the pot follow these next steps:

1. The black circle forms the brim of the pilgrim hat. Once you cut out the circle place it down on a flat surface, then take the pot and place hot glue around the rim.
2. Flip the clay pot over so the rim is facing down. Then center it over the black circle and set it down. The hot glue will secure the clay pot to the foam paper. You should have a 1/2 inch to 1-inch overhang all the way around the clay pot.
3. Once the glue dries flip the pot over, take a knife or scissors and cut out a circle by cutting along the inner rim of the pot. (See picture)
4. Fill with potting soil and plant.
5. Hot glue yellow buckle to the front side of the clay pot. (See picture)

If using fake flowers follow these next steps:

1. Take a small piece of floral foam and hot glue it to the bottom inside of the clay pot.
2. The black circle forms the brim of the pilgrim hat. Once you cut out the circle place it down on a flat surface, then take the pot and place hot glue around the rim.
3. Flip the clay pot over so the rim is facing down. Then center it over the black circle and set it down. The hot glue will secure the clay pot to the foam paper. You should have a 1/2 inch to 1-inch overhang all the way around the clay pot.
4. Once the glue dries flip the pot over, take scissors and poke a dime size hole into the middle of the black circle.
5. Insert your stems through this hole and push into the floral foam.
6. Hot glue yellow buckle onto the front of the clay pot. (See Picture)
Tomato Mosaic Virus
What is Tomato Mosaic Virus?
Tomato Mosaic Virus is a virus which can affect over 350 different plant species, including but not limited to tomatoes, peppers, petunias, tobacco, marigolds, and snapdragons.

What are the symptoms?
Symptoms will vary from plant to plant, but the most apparent sign is a light and dark green mosaic pattern on the leaves of the plant. Leaves tend to be fern-like in appearance with pointed tips and younger leaves may be twisted. Other symptoms include stunted growth, fruit deformities, and a reduction in the amount of fruit produced. Fruits that are cut open may also have brown areas inside.

How is the virus transmitted?
It can be seed-borne, transmitted mechanically and may be present in tobacco products. Debris left on the ground from infected plants can infect new plants. Gardeners that smoke or use tobacco products may infect plants with the virus left on their hands after handling contaminated tobacco. Gardening tools, pots or planters that may have held an infected plant can affect new plants in the future if not sanitized.

Are there treatments or a cure?
There are no chemicals available to cure or protect plants. Practicing safe sanitation is the best way to reduce infection. Sterilize and wash gardening tools, pots, and planters regularly. Wash hands after smoking. Avoid planting in areas where infected plants have been grown. Grow plants resistant to the TMV virus.

What do I need to do if my tomato plants have Tomato Mosaic Virus?
Destroy all plants infected along with their roots. Do not compost. Sterilize gardening tools, pots, and planters used on that planter. Plant in a different area next season.
