Cardinal Facts
Image
Northern Cardinals favor shrubby habitat on forest edges, dense roadside thickets and are found in most neighborhoods in the Southeast. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, fruits and insects. Offer food in feeders that give them plenty of room, since they are fairly large songbirds. Tray feeders and fly-throughs are perfect, especially when filled with black oil sunflower and safflower seed. Mealworms, suet kibbles and fresh grapes make great treats! Fresh, clean water in their birdbath is important, also.

The bond between a pair of cardinals is very endearing. The male and female often pass food and nesting material back and forth with their bills during the breeding season. Both parents are very involved with nesting and raising young. Cardinals molt during the late summer and early fall, and are absolutely stunning going into the winter months. Cardinals traditionally symbolize hope, joy, health, rejuvenation and celebration. It's also said that when a cardinal appears, angels are near. Whatever they mean to you, cheery, red Northern Cardinals are a favorite at our feeders, and always bring a smile to our faces. This reflects when purchasing merchandise for our stores, as you can see with a small sampling of our huge selection of everyday and holiday items below. :)
