Kimberly's Carats

Gemologist George Kunz was a notable Zircon advocate. He once proposed the name “starlite” to promote the gem’s fiery nature. The name never caught on.

Archaeological excavations revealed that the rulers of ancient Egypt adorned themselves with turquoise jewelry, and Chinese artisans were carving it more than 3,000 years ago.

In 1967 a Masai tribesman stumbled upon a cluster of highly transparent, intense violet-to-blue crystals weathering out of the earth in Merelani, an area of northern Tanzania. The result was Tanzanite!

Ingrid and Karl

Our friends from Scandinavia have returned to help us during the holidays. Look for them on facebook and other social media with great holiday ideas. They'll be here until they head home before the big day.

Some of you have asked us about Ingrid and Karl. They are creatures from Nordic folklore and are often called Nisse (Norway) or Tomte (Sweden). They typically live in the houses and barns of the farmstead. If treated well they protect the family and animals. During the holidays Nisse/Tomte are often seen with the Christmas Goat or a pig and they hand out presents on Christmas Eve. It is traditional to leave out a bowl of porridge and butter for the Nisse/Tomte.

December Birthstones

December has three birthstones, Blue Zircon, Turquoise and Tanzanite.

Zircon is found in a wide range of colors. For many years colorless Zircon was used to imitate diamonds. Folk wisdom grants Zircon the power to relieve pain, whet the appetite, protect travelers from disease and injury, to ensure a warm welcome, and to prevent nightmares. Major sources of Zircon are Thailand, Cambodia, and the southern part of Vietnam.

Turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones. Turquoise varies in color from greenish blue, through robin's egg-blue, to sky blue shades and its transparency ranges from translucent to opaque. Turquoise is plentiful and is available in a wide range of sizes. It is most often used for beads, cabochons, carvings, and inlays. Although its popularity fluctuates in fashion, it is a perennial favorite in the American Southwest.

Discovered in the late 1960s in Tanzania, and found only there, Tanzanite exhibits a rich violet-blue color for which it is treasured; often it is heat-treated to achieve this color. Colors range from blue to purple, and Tanzanites that are medium dark in tone, vivid in saturation, and slightly violet blue command premium prices.
