Kimberly's Carats

The term carbuncle was often used in ancient times to refer to red garnets, although it was used for almost any red stone. Carbuncle was thought to be one of the four precious stones given to King Solomon.

Marie Antoinette Jewelry

Recently a large, drop-shaped natural pearl pendant sold for more than $36 million at an auction of jewelry that once belonged to French Queen Marie Antoinette. Sotheby's is calling it a record price for a pearl at auction. The "Queen Marie Antoinette's Pearl," a diamond-and-pearl pendant, was among the highlight offerings at the sale in Geneva. Sotheby's billed the sale as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to scoop up heirlooms and jewels that have been held in the Bourbon-Parma dynasty for generations. Some of the Marie Antoinette jewelry hadn't been seen in public for 200 years. Like many of the 10 pieces for sale, the pendant obliterated the pre-auction estimate of $1-2 million. It sold for the equivalent of $32 million. With the buyer's premium and fees the total sale rose to more than $36 million. The buyer wanted to remain anonymous. All told, the pieces reaped nearly $43 million.

January Birthstone

January's birthstone is Garnet. The word garnet comes from the 14th Century Middle English word gernet meaning dark red. The word is derived from Latin granatum which means seed because of the gemstone’s resemblance to the beautifully red seeds of the pomegranate.

Garnet is the name of a group of minerals that comes in a rainbow of colors from the deep red of the Pyrope garnet to the vibrant green of Tsavorites. Some rare garnets are even blue, colorless, or—most rare of all—change colors in different lights. But the most common color is a beautiful range of reds, from rust colored to deep violet-red.
