Hello Great Gardener,

Great news to share in the New Year! My daughter had her testing done, and they were happy with the results. The vein has not entirely collapsed yet, but it is 99%. So she has been released from all restrictions except contact sports. She will have to have another Angiogram done when she turns 18, but until then she only has to go back for checkups and maybe an MRI or two.

She was super excited she got to go ice skating for the first time during Christmas vacation and she is looking forward to learning how to ride a bike this summer.
As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, hit reply. I would love to hear from you. Have a great-gardening day.

Sincerely,
Holly

Beautiful Orchids
Image
One of the most highly coveted of ornamental plants, the delicate, exotic and graceful orchid represents love, luxury, beauty and strength.

They are long-lived, and, with proper care, will bloom again and again for many years. They come in a variety of flower colors such as white, purple, pink or yellow.

Orchids are a beautiful, inexpensive replacement for a cut flower arrangement or just an added delight for any room in your home or office. The Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchid is one of the best and most readily available Orchid variety. The flowers of a Phalaenopsis open off a long arching spike and often last 2-3 months.
Light:
Indirect, sunlight is best. Place near a north or east-facing window. If in a west or south facing window ensure that the window is draped with a sheer curtain to block out the direct rays of the sun.
Image
Water:
The easiest way to kill any Orchid is by over-watering. Always allow the top 50% of the potting compost to dry out before watering. Never allow it to sit in water and keep water off the flowers.
Image
Fertilize:
Fertilize every two weeks while the plant is actively growing. Do not fee when it is dormant or when the plant is in bloom.
Pruning:
In nature, Orchids get much of their food and water from the air, so never cut off any air roots that emerge from the soil. When the flower stalk turns yellow or brown, it is time to prune. Cut the stalk back to about an inch from where it originated on the main stem. Pruning helps the plant to produce more flowers during the next season.
Soil & Repotting:
Use a bark-based or peat based soil that retains water but still drains well when repotting. Here at the store, we sell Espoma Organic Orchid Mix.

Re-potting should be done every one to two years before the soil breaks down. Do not re-pot while the plant is in bloom. Select pot size for root mass, not top size.
Orchid Symbolism
Image

Pink - symbolize femininity, grace and joy.
Yellow - symbolize friendship and new beginnings. They make great gifts for a friend to celebrate an accomplishment.
Purple - symbolize royalty and admiration, and are traditionally given as a sign of respect.
Pink - are the traditional flower of a couple's 14th and 25th wedding anniversary.
