April 2019
Issue 114
Hello Great Gardeners,

"The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit."

― Nelson Henderson

Did you know that Arbor Day was started in 1872 by Julius Sterling Morton in Nebraska? Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although the dates may vary in keeping with the local climate. In Ohio, it is this Friday, April 26th.

Arbor Day celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. It is an excellent opportunity to take stock of the trees on your property and plan for the future. Inspect your trees. Note any broken branches or evidence of disease or insect infestation. Think about how planting new trees might improve the look of your property or provide wind or heat protection.
As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, hit reply. I would love to hear from you. Have a great-gardening day.

Sincerely,
Holly

From AEPOHIO.COM

Consider the following when selecting a tree:
  • Height: Will it come within 10 feet of power lines when it's fully grown?
  • Canopy Spread: How wide will the tree grow?
  • Growth Rate: A slow growing-species is typically stronger and lives longer than fast-growing species.
  • Form Or Shape: A columnar tree grows in less space. Round or V-shaped trees provide more shade.
The taller a tree will become, the further it needs to be from overhead lines.
Small Trees (Less than 20 Feet Tall)
When planting within 15 feet of power lines is unavoidable

Raised Bed Gardening
Image
Raised bed gardens make it easy for anyone to garden. They take up less space and provide higher yields than planting in the ground. They can be any size, shape or height and made from many different materials.
Be it that you are making your own or buying one pre-made, there are a few tips and guidelines to follow.

Make sure you can reach the middle without standing in it. Most raised beds are no greater than 4 feet wide.

Choose a spot in your garden that receives full sun, meaning at least 6 hours of sun per day.

Make your own growing medium or use a potting mix, such as our Wilson’s Potting Mix.

A north-south orientation is best for low-growing crops, allowing direct sunlight to reach both sides of the bed. For taller crops such as pole beans, peas and tomatoes an east west orientation works best.

Leave enough space in between beds to easily maneuver around.

Pay attention to how you space your plants in the bed. Plants should ideally just touch, forming a canopy over the soil when they are mature.

Use trellises for vine crops. Such as tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans, melons, etc…

Keep good gardening practices such as watering, fertilizing, crop rotation, composting and sanitation.

Use your imagination and have fun!
