If finding good people is a challenge for you, then it is a good indicator that there is an issue with your culture. So it is time for a gut check.
Define…then seek.

For starters, we filter out any candidates that do not fit our values. When we interview people about working with us, candidates are surprised by our questions. That is because we look to hire for fit. How often have you hired for skill and fired for values?
Our Core Values

For example, at Management One, we know that the people we hire fit our values. So there is an implicit level of trust. We also wanted our people to feel they had flexibility. That led us to implement an unlimited vacation policy.
Unlimited Vacation Policy
After 4 years of implementing this policy, we have seen unprecedented productivity. We only had one employee take advantage, and that was easily resolved. Instead of fearing the worst, think about the upside. We do not have to keep track of sick days, and our people are great about providing plenty of notice and coverage before they take off.
Broaden your search and think creatively.
I was speaking to a retailer last month who was complaining about not finding people. I said, “You are in L.A. There are lots of unemployed actors working as servers. I am sure they would love to have a career path available, if acting did not work out.” Your store is a stage and they have the training and skills to perform. There are community theatres in almost every town in America. It seems to me they have a great skill set and are coachable, and competitive, which are two important traits for selling.

The opportunity in hiring is to think differently about how you prospect and hire. It is not just about you; it is about them, and creating a good fit.

Think seriously about what it is you offer besides a paycheck. You just might find a larger pool of interest for your available positions.
