January 2020 Newsletter

Image
Our Lady's Center wishes you a very
Happy and Blessed New Year!
We dedicate the January newsletter to the Holy Name of Jesus. The name Jesus was given at God's command (Luke 1:31). It is all-powerful because of the Person Who bears it. We honor it because of the command of Christ that we should pray in His Name, because it reminds us of all the blessings we receive through our Holy Redeemer, and because through this devotion we also make amends for improper use of the Holy Name." At the Name of Jesus let every knee bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth and let every tongue confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father."

Eucharistic Adoration during the March for Life
Friday, January 24h, 12:30 pm - 7:30 pm
The 46th Annual March for Life in Washington DC takes place on January 24th. Hundreds of thousands will march, people of all walks of life who share the deep conviction that the sanctity of all human life must be defended for a just culture to exist. Many area parishes will have busses ready for transportation. If you cannot physically attend the March, please join us in spirit by coming to the OLC chapel that day anytime between our 12:00 Noon and 7:30 pm Masses to pray before the Blessed Sacrament for the cause of Life, that hardened hearts will be softened and eyes opened to the beauty and dignity that each human life inherently contains, from the moment of conception to natural death. If we see with the eyes of Christ, every single human life is infinitely valuable.

Blessing of the Throats
Monday, February 3rd, 12:00 Noon Mass
Join us for Mass and have your throat blessed with candles. This tradition dates back to the 4th century after St. Blaise, a bishop and martyr, saved a boy choking on a fishbone. While we invoke St. Blaise for his protection against any physical ailment of the throat, let us also ask his protection against any spiritual ailment—, profanity, cursing, unkind remarks, or gossip. St. James warns us, "If a man who does not control his tongue imagines that he is devout, he is self-deceived; his worship is pointless." This warning is particularly appropriate in a society whose interactions have become increasingly uncivil. St. Blaise, pray for us!

Our 2019 Patron Christmas Party
Was Full of Good Cheer

OLC warmly welcomed our friends, patrons, and benefactors to a Christmas celebration in their honor in the week before Christmas. There were many delectable dishes and goodies furnished by those who attended, along with Christmas ham and all the fixings. The conference room became a bit cozy for a good portion of the day (but we are all basically family anyway!) New acquaintances and friendships were formed, and many who came lingered into the afternoon to talk with each other and to witness the Christmas raffle drawings which took place that afternoon with Msgr. Joseph Lizor, who is on our Board of Directors, pulling the winning tickets. The joy of the season was evident, but even more so, the joy that permeates Our Lady's Center throughout the year was on full and glorious display. We are SO blessed by all of you!

Christmas Basket Raffle nets over $4000!
Our annual Christmas Basket Raffle was an enormous success! How amazing that we were able to exactly match the value of the contents of all the donated giftware and certificates in our baskets. Our baskets were worth more than ever before, and you helped us make the whole endeavor an amazing success. We wish that every single one of you who entered could have won, but it is our hope that you at least feel rewarded in knowing that your kind, generous, enthusiastic support enables us to continue this unique and holy ministry and that many will be blessed because of you!

St. Nick Visit Brings Dozens of Smiles
Our Lady's Center celebrated the Feast of St. Nicholas with another lively visit by the great Bishop of Myra. St Nick was once again convincingly portrayed by our own President of the Board, Jack Kissane. Around 45 children sang Christmas carols, learned all about St. Nick's life and mission of charity, had their pictures taken with him, and were excited to discover gold coins in their shoes which they had left under the Christmas tree. We are so joyful to provide this happily-anticipated tradition here at OLC, and we plan to continue it for years to come.

Once again, must not forget to acknowledge the amazing efforts of Boardmember Diane Andrews in decorating the chapel so elegantly for Christmas. We are enormously grateful for her dedication creative talent!

Your support in the Bookstore and Gift Shop has helped to make 2019, our 45th Anniversary, the most successful year ever for Our Lady's Center Marian Shrine, and we are deeply grateful! We loved seeing each of you and meeting so many new patrons who discovered us this year. We count ourselves deeply blessed to be able to serve you as we carry out our duties as little handmaids to the Blessed Mother. Please continue to make OLC a part of your lives in 2020. Let us know if there is any Catholic resource or item we can help you find. We have thousands of items in catalogs that we can special order for you, often combining with our own orders to save you shipping (and we are tax-exempt!) Please bring your friends to OLC and spread the word about this very special place of grace, so many more hearts can be touched by the gentle love of Our Blessed Mother and the abiding peace that only her Son can give. May God bless you and keep you in the coming year!

Our Hail Mary Pashmina in Medjugorje
Patron Kathy Clugg, OFS recently traveled to Medjugorje on pilgrimage led by Fr. Jon Kightlinger, and she brought along one of our Hail Mary Pashmina Scarves, appropriately colored Blessed Mother Blue. She said she loves it and wore it everywhere there. We are so honored that a product we helped develop to honor Our Lady was taken along on such a meaningful journey. If you have photos of items you purchased at OLC in special places, email them to us. We'd love to see and perhaps feature them in upcoming newsletters.
