March 2021 Newsletter

The Church dedicates February to the HOLY FAMILY, our model of virtue for the Catholic home and the ideal of what family life should exemplify. The family is the school of virtue for both parents and children. It is where we learn to love God and others, to pray and to practice the gift of charity. “The family, more than any other human reality, is the place in which the person is loved for himself and in which he learns to live the sincere gift of self” (Pope St. JPII). Is it any wonder that the family is under attack? Let us pray for all families, especially for those suffering from the brokenness of estrangement.

THIS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17TH!
Special Blessing on St. Patrick's Day
12:00 Noon Mass
Come celebrate this special feast day by enjoying a beautiful rendition of the hymn, Be Thou My Vision, receiving a special blessing, and praying the Lorica Prayer for Protection (lorica means armor or breastplate). In this critical time of spiritual warfare, let us follow St. Patrick's example and drive the snakes from our hearts, our homes, and our land through a brave and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.

Also, as it is Wednesday, stay for the special devotions to St. Joseph we are praying during the Universal Year of St. Joseph. The world desperately needs the intercession of St. Joseph, patron of fathers, families, the Universal Church and the Terror of Demons! Prayers will be prayed with the purpose of receiving a plenary indulgence, other necessary conditions being met. Learn more about the plenary indulgences for the Year of St. Joseph HERE and how it all came about, through the efforts of Fr. Calloway and the Marians, HERE. Additionally, every FIRST Wednesday of the month is especially dedicated to St. Joseph. Learn about the Nine First Wednesdays HERE.

THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 19TH!
Group Consecration to St. Joseph
Immediately following 12:00 Noon Mass
We will be celebrating the feast day of St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by having a group consecration after Mass at OLC for those who have been preparing. The priest will lead us in the consecration, and commemorative, frameable certificates will be presented to those who have consecrated. One year ago, Msgr. Lizor led a similar consecration outside at OLC on March 19th, and it was the last event we held before the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to temporarily close

The 2021 Defend Life Speaker Series Presents:
Sr. Dede Byrne: Serving God & Country
Dede Byrne - a religious sister, soldier, and surgeon - is clearly a ROCK STAR in the pro-life movement. Who will ever forget her most memorable words at the 2020 Republican National Convention when she said, "I’m not just PRO-LIFE, I’m PRO-ETERNAL LIFE!" We especially loved when she pulled out her rosary, her "weapon of choice." Sister Dede is the older sister of Father Bill Byrne, Chaplain of the Catholic Student Center at the University of Maryland of College Park.
Space is limited. Overflow in conference room with livestream.

Noon Mass will follow the talk. After Mass, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed and confessions will begin. The rosary, usually prayed at 11:30 am, will be prayed at the beginning of Exposition.

*For those who cannot attend, Defend Life talks are usually recorded and posted at their website, www.defendlife.org.

IN THE NEWS...

YOUR LENTEN GENEROSITY IS AMAZING!!!
As Lent began, we became aware that there were several instances of priests in need of immediate financial assistance. This afforded opportunities for almsgiving, and you, our wonderful patrons completely blew us away with your generosity by raising $9,000! On behalf of three grateful priests, we say thank you with all of our hearts. You make us proud.

1) Last October, some serious floods struck the Upper East region of Ghana, including St. Anthony of Padua parish where Fr. David Azambawu is pastor. There was some loss of life and crops were destroyed, devastating to the poor farmers who make up most of the population of the parish. The price of food rose to levels that many of them could not afford. Fr. David had resided for a time at the Shrine of St. Anthony here in Ellicott City and had celebrated Masses for the St. Louis Knights of Columbus in Clarksville when Mike Leumas was Grand Knight. When the Knights heard of Fr. David's need, they jumped to his assistance. One of their members, Deputy Grand Knight, Joe Knight, is a server at OLC, and he brought the matter to our attention. We collected a large amount to assist in relief efforts which we presented to Mike Leumas, who deposited it for immediate relief and was able to come and thank everyone before Mass on March 12th.

2) Fr. Emile Yuban, a student from Cameroon studying in the US, was on his way to celebrate Friday evening Mass at OLC when he was involved in a hit and run on the beltway which caused significant damage to his car. Thankfully, he was not injured. His car, however, was not drivable and needed significant repairs. Again our OLC patrons came to the rescue, virtually covering the cost of the repairs. Fr. Emile, who celebrates Wednesday and Friday evening Masses at OLC, is extremely grateful for your assistance through Our Lady's intercession and wants you to know he is offering Masses for your intentions.

3) Fr. Ambrose Onuegbuchulem, currently serving as a hospital chaplain in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, is from Nigeria. Incredibly, he also became the victim of a hit and run accident. Thankfully, he also was not injured However, his older model car was totaled, and the amount he received could not possibly cover the cost of a reliable replacement vehicle. When his need became known to us by a mutual friend, we turned once more to our patrons, and again you stepped up and assisted in covering the need of a priest. Through your incredible generosity, he was able to procure a dependable, gently used car which will enable him to fulfill all his duties, including celebrating Friday noon and First Saturday Masses here at OLC. Fr. Ambrose could not find the words to adequately express his appreciation. He wants everyone to know you are in his prayers and that he considers all of us his family.

Flame of Love Feast Day
Blessings to all who came and celebrated the Flame of Love Feast Day on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was passed to those in attendance. OLC Flame of Love Cenacles meet Tues. at 10 am, Thurs. at 10 am & Thurs. at 2 pm. These prayer groups meet weekly in the Chapel to pray for the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is Christ Himself, to be enkindled in our hearts and bring about a new Pentecost. There is no denying that this is exactly what our broken and hurting world needs. Learn more about this powerful and growing devotion HERE. Contact Board Member Ada Vergne for the materials and to sign up. Live streaming available for those who cannot attend in person.

Passion Talk
Matt Commins, son of the late OLC patron and server Bill Commins, gave a presentation on the passion of Christ on Ash Wednesday evening as wintery weather threatened. Those who attended despite the forecast experienced an intense, thorough and riveting explanation of just some of what Our Lord experienced in his physical body, enough to leave a deep and lasting impression. This was a most effective way to begin our journey of Lent.
