We all hate that heartbreaking thud of birds hitting our windows. They often cannot tell the difference between the reflected landscape seen in a window, and their real surroundings, thinking that the window is a continuation of their world. Introducing Window Gems, a new product designed to go on the outside of windows to break up this reflection, and give birds visual cues that this is a shiny wall. As birds fly towards a window protected with Gems, the reflections shift and move with their movements, while the Gems stay stationary. This warns them that something is wrong and gives them enough time to change direction before collision. Even in the shade without the added prismatic effect, they are incredibly effective. Made in the USA and available in several beautiful styles. Hitting stores this week!
As it gets warmer, mosquitoes can become a problem in standing water, like birdbaths. Solar Birdbath Bubblers (shown right) and Water Wigglers are two easy ways to keep mosquito larvae at bay, and moving water always attracts more birds.

Millions of neotropical migrants are passing through our area this month. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (shown below,) Gray Catbirds, Indigo Buntings, Baltimore Orioles and occasionally Summer Tanagers will visit our feeders for seed, suet or fruit. You can also attract a wide variety of migrants with mealworms, especially live ones. Migration fans can check out BirdCast, very cool, real-time daily bird migration maps and alerts to find out what's happening each day. Let us know what you are seeing in your yard!
