An exciting visitor at Karen's house this week--a female Rufous Hummingbird is coming to her feeders! This is the fifth Rufous (plus one Allen's Hummingbird) that she has hosted. The trick to attracting winter hummingbirds, especially in late fall, is to have late-blooming plants like Pineapple Sage and Turks Cap, along with maintaining at least a few hummingbird feeders with fresh nectar...just in case! We've also noticed that many yards with winter hummers have running water.
