Bird Watcher News   July 20th, 2021

Young hummingbirds from first broods are off nests now, and adult males' jobs of guarding territory are mostly done. Many females are on their second nest of the season, but post-breeding dispersal has officially begun! Ruby-throats need to fatten up for migration, often doubling their weight to make the trek, and our feeders make great fuel stops! That's why late July through early September is always our busy season for hummers.

Let us show you our favorite hummingbird feeders, help you fight wasps and ants, and keep everything clean.

Whether you mix your own nectar (four parts warm water to one part white sugar,) or use Cole's Nature's Garden or Easy Mix Hummingbird Nectar, make sure to change it at least twice weekly when temperatures reach 80F. And never use red dyes!

With all this rain lately, hanging rain guards above your feeders is a great idea! Go for a red one to provide even more hummingbird-attracting color.
