SAVE THE DATE!
Hummingbird activity is really picking up at our feeders now. Lots of chasing and squabbling! Many of you have asked about our Annual Hummingbird Banding Event. It will be held on Saturday morning, September 11th at Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw, GA. Tickets will go on sale August 31st. This is a fun and educational event for kids and adults, and we hope you can make it!

We try to give as many kids as possible the chance to release hummers after the banding process. It's an amazing experience they will never forget.  Make sure to arrive early for the best chance!

If you have problems with leaky hummingbird feeders attracting ants and bees, we can help! We love bees, and never want to cause them harm, but prefer that they leave our feeders alone. Saucer-style feeders like the Cole's Hummer High Rise Feeder (pictured below) are a much better choice than gravity-fed, bottle-style feeders, even those that come with "bee guards." Hummers' tongues will reach all the way to the bottom of the feeder, but bees' mouth parts cannot. The Hummer High Rise has a built in ant moat, but we also sell larger ones that you can add for extra protection. We also recommend running multiple feeders, especially this time of year. These guys are tanking up for a huge migration, and additional feeders will give more birds a chance to feed, especially younger or shyer hummingbirds.

Hummingbird nectar is super easy to make at home. Just remember 4:1 (Four parts warm water to one part white sugar, ie. 1 cup of warm water to 1/4 cup sugar will fill most feeders.) Mix well, cool and serve; no need to boil. Never use any brown or organic sugars; their kidneys cannot process it. Change nectar at least every 2-3 days during high temps.
