Hi, BirdWatchers!

Hummingbird activity is picking up! Young birds from the first broods are out on their own now, and adult males are already starting to migrate south. Hummingbird feeders are a great place to fuel up and put on weight for migration. Competition for good food sources can get pretty heated, and you may see some skirmishes at feeders as numbers increase, peaking in late August/early September.

We are asked LOTS of questions about feeding and attracting hummingbirds. Our best advice is to be consistent. Always keep your feeders clean and filled with fresh nectar. Change at least two to three times per week in hot temperatures. Anytime you spot dirt or black mold, clean with white vinegar or diluted plain bleach (not soap) and rinse well. We do sell commercial nectar in our stores, but it is just as easy to make your own (that's what we do!) Always use regular white sugar, never brown or organic sugars which have ingredients that their kidneys cannot process. The recipe is 1 part sugar to 4 parts warm water (1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water if you just have one feeder; 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water for larger batches.) Running multiple feeders is encouraged. We usually have at least five or more going in our yard. You can hang feeders in groups or spread them around. Either way, there will still be some fighting. Add a few of their favorite flowers like salvia, cigar plant, turk's cap, agastache, cardinal flower or coral honeysuckle. Don't forget water. They love to fly through mist or spray from a Solar Bubbler in birdbaths. Limit or eliminate pesticides, since they eat tons of tiny insects, too. Ant and bee problems can be prevented with ant traps/moats and using saucer-style feeders (pictured below,) which do not leak and attract far fewer bees.
