Hello Great Gardener,
While you were reading the last e-newsletter, I was enjoying a week in beautiful Maine. Maine was hotter than Newark, so it was like going from the oven into the frying pan. The heat index for one of the days was 106 degrees. They said that this summer had been their hottest and most humid summer yet.
When I was younger, my parents took my brother and me whale watching. I remember being so scared because every time someone spotted a whale everyone on the boat would run to that side of the vessel and it would tip way over to the side. I thought for sure we would end up flipping upside down. I remember gripping the handrails for dear life while watching whales swim through the ocean. It was an experience I wanted to show my daughter this year, but unfortunately, every whale watching place was booked solid. Next time we go I need to remember to make a reservation ahead of time.
In this issue, fall webworm information. I noticed these were making an appearance across the Eastern states including Ohio on our way home. Also, five unique trees and shrubs for tight spots.

Fall webworms are now making an appearance on trees and shrubs. They multiply rapidly and can defoliate a large number of trees and shrubs in a short amount of time. The best way to remove them is trimming out branches with the nest and disposing of them in the garbage. BT Thuricide can be used sparingly if an infestation is too high.

Japanese Snowbell 'Evening Light'
Styrax japonica 'Evening Light'
New For 2018!
One of the most beautiful blooming trees in the spring garden, new foliage opens to rich violet shades. Ultra-fragrant white bell shaped blooms are held open on maroon stems. Makes a striking combination with its dark purple foliage and shaded green tones. By early fall, this tree will re-bloom when kept consistently moist through summer months. The growth habit is slow, resulting in an upright, vase-shaped tree, which fits well into small, sunny or partly sunny spots in the garden.
